Cults and political persuasion

Republicanism has taken a very hard right turn.  To be a Republican today is to join a cult. This cult believes in money.  Money is the one thing that holds any of it's current logic in a place of power.  Money is more important than the environment , than personal health, than future relations with allies, than race relations, than international conspiracy, than education, than reason.  Money has become the root of all evil because it is loved above these things, as though that very admiration will solve all of our problems.  It is never seen as an integral part of why we have the ills we do.

But there has to be a moral high ground in loving money.  And that is where cultism is born. Q-anon and the "deep state" have taken root in the minds of far too many Republican mental functions.  It has strange roots that have grown from "tea party" mentality, from underlying desires to hold on to privilege that "others", including "liberals" have taken away.  The connection to the ways in which that privilege has cost those people and cultures and even nations not falling within its scope remains in the realm of willful ignorance.  The loss of natural habitat with healthy diversity is of little concern to greed.  The loss of healthy diversity in culture is likewise unseen.  The roots of selfishness has grown into a belief in a deep state that tries to undermine a godlike leader, who understands this nation belongs to them, and only to them.  This deep state involves many celebrities and other sorts of liberals, like Obama, and Clinton and .....  Democrats, who have enslaved kidnapped children and drink their blood in the basement of a Pizza Parlor.  Drinking those children's blood allows these liberals to feel young.  But even some of Trump's Republicans understand the absurdity of that, and have developed alternative cult initiatives that satisfy the same need to find a high ground within that moral corruption of greed.  Some Republicans can survive on the notion that this nation was built for white people, who are far more reasonable that "colored" peoples, and are above these kinds of riots, because as they have demonstrated, they can open carry guns into a Walmart, or into a State House, and not shoot anybody, unless they can actually find a reason.  Sometimes the reason is that they may be wearing a police uniform, or were "afraid for their life"  after provoking an incident. These particular whites tell others to go back where they came from without a glimmer of understanding where they themselves came from or why others may be here.  These whites believe they are superior because they fear they are not.

Alas, there are more opportunities for culturing cult mentality. Bastardizing the very teachings of Jesus Christ gives ample fodder for over the top evangelicals who thrive more on the emotional highs of "rapture" than on the hard work of separating truth from false representations and lies.  The ability to see beyond what they want to see, is lost in the emotion that satisfies the need to be among the "chosen" ones.  And those chosen deserve salvation and ......  money.  The others must be banished.

At every turn the new Republican cult mentality can turn the blame for our ills on someone else; the "Mexicans" whose indigenous ancestry on these lands have been crushed; the many tribes that have been brutally crushed and ignored when sacred waters, and indeed precious ecosystems, they try to protect; the Chinese for inventing the COvid while leadership simply promoting and following the protocol established over the past 3 or 4 Presidencies would have solved this particular problem by now.  Socialism is blamed for the weaknesses of how we have employed capitalism.

It should be no real surprise that our capitalism has given rise to a fascist leaning GOP.  Citizens United and other rulings have given corporations and big money ridiculous powers within government.  Money rules government.  And greed drives the rules money makes.  During WWII, Ford Motors built motors to drive the Nazi War machinery.  Standard Oil, Nestle's, and Chase Manhattan Bank all aided the Nazi cause.  Unfettered capitalism seems to like fascism, and the stock market can always show big gains while a huge portion of the nation suffers and wages do not sustain living. Unfettered capitalism loses its moral compass, when it is given power over its people, and autocracy thrives.

Today, Trump boasted that he has "done more for the black population than any Democrat ever has..."  The history, of course, of those he catered to in order to win an electoral victory tells a much different story.  He has never confronted the Nazi symbolism within the GOP that has come out to support him, nor spoken out against the actions of the KKK, white nationalists nor any racist organizations nor actions.  In fact, he has spoken in code that he is a "nationalist".  By failing to condemn racist and even anti-Semitic actions that hail backwards to fascist beginnings, he has given his implicit approval.  The GOP has no majority, no chance of winning, without these factions and unholy alliance of over-the-top evangelicals and white supremacists.

We can and we will end this charade.  We will learn and build it better.

After the run for VT House

Unexpected, just unexpected. Went to my local favorite Bobcat Cafe tonight for a hamburger. Surprised that at 6:30 so many seats were available at the bar on Friday night. Sat down next to a man I recognized and knew was friendly. We'd seen each other more than on a few occasions, but I didn't know his name until tonight I asked. He knew me, he said. The first thing he said to me was, “Hey! I voted for you.”
I replied sincerely, “Hey, thank you. I guess I let a few people down.”
No, that's not the way it goes down,” he said, “ they didn't hear you. I heard you.”
What did you hear?” I wondered.
The urgency.”
I looked him over. Viewing from my 65 years of experience I figured him to be 69 or 70. I've come to recognize men who have been through military experiences and after telling him my age, asked him his. He is 80. Served on a submarine that spied on Russia.
Yeah,” I said, “Urgency was key to my message. You're 80? Damn, you are incredible! Your handshake is awesome, and you are on top of shit!”
Genetics. Look, I was impressed by how you dealt with that fall. You don't come through that unless you are a fighter. I followed your story when you went off that building, I followed you when you were in that wheelchair and and all that. You're amazing. Why did you decide to run for House, man?”
I couldn't sleep. I just thought I had to say something where it might matter. If my pulpit was only going to be knee high, I was going to use it.”
By now it was noticeably louder and the bar stools were all taken and people were standing around and behind us. I'd ordered my burger and a gin and tonic and he ordered his second gin. He was incredibly sharp and facile in his speech.
So what do you feel was your main message, the thing that you stood for?”
He was looking for substance.
Really, it boiled down to the fact that what we wanted to do for education, for health care, for energy, for whatever, the four of us running were probably going to vote the same. The main message I wanted everybody to understand is that what is going on at the national level is affecting whatever it is we want to do here. That clean water, that Lake Champlain.....”
All politics is local, right?” He interrupted.
Exactly.”
I heard that right away and couldn't agree more.”
Really? Thanks!” Then I talked about the mistakes I knew I'd made and how my work had affected the number of doors I could afford to knock on and so on.
I am totally behind you,” he told me. “ You have to keep running”
I don't know,” I said. “I just don't see the fire in others that I feel has to happen. I mean, right now! I think people think they can go about business as usual and everything will turn out. Maybe it will, but without that fire, it doesn't seem like it will.”
You learned a lot right? You should keep at it. We... I … want you to keep at it.”
But what if it's too late? I don't see how we can make it if we don't put up a huge blockade by THIS November. I mean, it has to be done now!”
Yeah. But you can only do what you can do. You run again in two years, I will help you. I totally got what you had to say and what you think you have to offer. It's good stuff. I want to help and I know there are others. So don't stop now.”
All I could say was “Wow. You know how to humble a guy”
Aw shut up. Anybody who's been through what you have and come out like this gets my support.”
And you sir, have all of mine. I can only imagine having the acuity that you have at 80. You've lifted me up at a time I didn't realize how much I needed it.”

Social norms

Bullets rain on a festival of thousands
Delivered by a madman with selfish anger
War creates madmen
Images and praise for revenging make madmen
Guns give madmen a chance for glory
Guns give sane men a chance to go mad

One war is over, but there is no such thing
Over is history that must be avenged
The only logic is to win at all costs
Forget the travesties against the old world
Forget the genocide pushing natives aside
Build a new nation with principle and pride

Speaking of principle, but mostly of pride
National rifle gunners, jump in to show kindness
And announce that civilians must not be automatic
But almost automatic is a must, be assured
And if you still need that big chance for madness
Don't worry- silencers will be available to all

But this nation of greed is still a nation of laws
And fears we will mitigate with those who make laws
With unfettered freedoms and dollars galore
We'll lobby for justice and buy us some more
Rich can get richer and keep money flowing
Because buying Congress is costly for sure

We can learn from the others that God's on our side
And using His words we can all justify
That our cause is righteous, and must conquer all
For our way of life is the way to great peace
We are the truth , the way to the light
So Christian soldiers arm Jesus with guns

Capitalism eats itself

Capitalism eats itself
Amazon buys whole foods
No need for cashiers
News declares consumers are winners
Cashiers have inability to consume
Let them eat cake
Rich remove support systems
Rich live on, poor die off
Crime explodes
Gated communities
New apartheid, new segregation
No new blood, boundaries secured
Rich automate production
Fake money is further faked
Two companies vie for crumbs
Wall Street and Banking are meaningless
Guns aplenty fire from every direction
Freedom reigns

A Reichstag fire ?

Heather Richardson, Professor of History at Boston

College, said this declaration of a Muslim ban coming from

Bannon through the White House is "Shock Event"

manipulation.   She said in her essay that historically these

events have been used to get the masses arguing

among themselves and so distract from the purpose of

protests.   Historically, there are many such political

maneuverings that have swayed opinion or just plain

brought the public to heel, and bolstered Presidential

approval ratings to boot.

Let's pretend that Bannon and company wanted to end

all these protests that are making our new President so

uncomfortable and they are feeling a loss of power and/or

positions and they staged this shock event without even

passing the declaration through their own party channels.

A really big "shock event", something like 9/11, could then

be staged.  A "terrorist" major killing event could then set

off all sorts of assault rifle revenge and confusion among

arguing groups and liberals calling for calm and social

media stories made up by varied vying groups.  This would

result in a parade of puppets that make up this cabinet

to decree martial law.  The protestors would lose their

voices and their power and all would be ceded to the

government The many would see this as reasonable and the

few would come to understand this as how fascism

comes to a democratic society.

Genesis one:one

Genesis one:one

IN the beginning was the dense blackness of potential energy. Energy was God and God was with intention. In the dense blackness of nothingness, energy pressed in upon itself. As God pressed ever inward, matter was given form until there was an explosion of light, and matter scattered into nothingness. As God was matter, God was with light, and God was also light. Darkness was banished and life was given to the universe in stars, planets, solar systems, and galaxies. With this the God of energy set in motion the the laws that would govern the universe. The laws of gravity, motion, magnetism, chemistry and others, fell into place and mind was born. In accordance with God's intention, the evolution of mind is ever increasing and exists in all things, as God is ever evolving and exists in all things. Intention begat organization and with that came the miracle of consciousness and of soul, for it is with the awareness of existence that consciousness is connected to the laws set forth by the God of light, of energy, of matter and all that has come after. The soul is as intimately connected to mind as matter is with energy. Thus the universe is ever evolving and what is now is not what will always be, but the laws that govern what is, will always be. And God sees that this is good.

Bernie

When I was in the eighth grade, Mrs. Weiss assigned us to write an essay on "What Americanism Means to Me".  While I included apple pie and sports and Saturday mornings, I turned negative attention toward some things.  At 13 years, I was not precociously socially aware, but I had been sensitized to a few things.  When I was eleven I walked in to a "colored men and women" bathroom in Louisiana that was located behind the gas station. I had to go badly and I actually looked at my arms and decided they were "colored" so figured it was OK.   The bathroom was an outhouse that was poorly kept.  When I came out, the men in the gas station were laughing and pointing at me.  I physically internalized racism for the first time.  The feeling stays with me today, but in my 8th grade paper all I was able to say was that racism was a looming problem for our country.
I had experienced polluted and unusable water when I lived in El Paso, and in making excursions into Juarez, I realized we were leaving the Rio Grande a mess as it trickled into Mexico, so I read about the great rivers of the U.S.  The topic of sickened waterways was impossible to avoid.  I included in my 8th grade paper, my disappointment at the lack of attention to what we were doing to some of the people and so much of our lands and waterways.  For that, and for not giving more on apple pie, I got an A- instead of an A, but my literary merit was praised.
From then until now I have had a growing awareness that large segments of our population work to remain unaware of how our corporate and nationalistic thinking affects the rest of the world.  We have remained ignorant not only about our treatment of so many people, but the natural and physical world we are incredibly dependent upon, as well.  The machinery of our economic system has seized our thought processes and praised capitalism to the position of God.  The machinery has made dirty words of liberal and anything that finds fault with unfettered capitalism.  The economic machinery controls morality and even religion is bent to its will.
And today, at a beautiful Burlington park, next to a threatened but hopeful and still beautiful Lake Champlain, Bernie Sanders talked about all of those things and more, in a way no other politician, no other Presidential candidate has ever admitted nor addressed so bluntly.   It is time for everyone who has known these things in their guts, as I have, and as so many of you have, to get up and take a stand. It is time.  Now is the time.  I don't believe there will be another opportunity, if we do not do it now.
